Kia is switching sports codes in New Zealand next year after signing up as the naming sponsor for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic netball team.

The ANZ Championship-winning team will now be known as the Kia Magic for the next three years.

Kia Motors has been a strong supporter of sports events in recent years, through the ASB Women's Classic, Heineken Men's Open and NZ Winter Games, but has reassessed its sponsorship involvements in New Zealand.

Todd McDonald, General Manager of Kia Motors New Zealand, says the opportunity to become involved in the country's leading female sport fits with the goals of the fastest-growing automotive company.

He adds: “We have been looking to lift our profile in a different way and the naming rights sponsorship of the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic will help us to do that.”

“As the Kia Magic, the team will provide us with consistent exposure during the ANZ Championship series and we are really looking forward to working with them and becoming involved in their campaign to retain their championship crown in 2013.”

Among other things, the sponsorship will see Kia vehicles provided to the team, to assist with transportation around the Waikato and Bay of Plenty Region. And Mr McDonald says there will also be a strong Kia presence at each of the games played by the Kia Magic as it helps to drive support for coach Noeline Taurua and the team
Transport use to be a major headache for the Southern Steel netball team when it first started, but not anymore thanks to Kia.

For the past three years, the ANZ Championship netball team has been supported by Kia Motors, who provides Ceratos for team members and a Sorento SUV for CEO David Bannister.

The Steel territory, which covers Southland and greater Otago, is one of the largest among the New Zealand franchises, and getting to practices, games and making promotional visits can be a challenge. The local Kia dealers, Southland Kia, Dunedin Kia and Aspiring Motor Group in Alexandra/Wanaka, got together with Kia Motors New Zealand and decided to help by providing a pool of vehicles for the team and CEO.

?Netball is very strong in the lower South Island, and Kia Motors are extremely proud to be associated with such a highly motivated and committed team. Our dealers in both provinces are very active in their local communities and by pooling our resources we have been able to make a collective difference and get the Southern Steel moving,? says Todd McDonald, General Manager of Kia Motors New Zealand.

“The sponsorship is also a perfect fit with the Kia global strategy of aligning our brand with high performance sports and sports people.”

During its three year sponsorship, Kia has provided a courtside red leather couch, reserved for special fans at every home game played by the Steel.

Known as the ‘Kia Couch?', it is used by netball fans who have overcome challenges in their lives or deserve recognition for a good deed or service to others in the local community. This year the team members are enjoying driving brand new Cerato hatchback 5-door cars that boast excellent interior space and comfort to accommodate their taller frames, along with a deep and spacious boot to hold their playing kit and luggage.

The large 7-seat Kia Sorento provides even more spacious executive transport for Mr Bannister and superb economy from its advanced R-series diesel engine.

It all helps to ease their minds and help them concentrate on what is regarded as the toughest club netball competition in the world.
